Martello Tower

The Martello Tower situated on the coast line of Balbriggan is the most northernly of twelve towers found all along the coastline of Fingal. These towers were built for defensive purposes following the renewal of war between England and France in 1803.

Lighthouse

Balbriggan lighthouse was built in 1769 under the supervision of the Hamilton family of Hampton hall.The harbour itself was built between1761-1765.Candles were the original means of illumination.George Hamilton was the keeper of the lighthouse for the first 43 years.

Bremore Castle

A branch of the Barnewall family occupied Bremore as a manorial seat from the early fourteenth century, and since that time some kind of castle would have been erected.

Balbriggan & District Historical Society

Balbriggan & District Historical Society was established in 1981 with the goal to promote an interest in the local history of Balbriggan & District through lectures, publications and exhibitions, and to establish a Museum in the Balbriggan District.

We hold six talks each year in March, April, May, August, September and October. These are held at 8pm on the last Wednesday of the month in the Town Hall Balbriggan.

Sack of Balbriggan Commemorative Medal

On 20th September 1920, during an altercation in Smyth’s public house in Balbriggan, RIC constable Peter Burke was fatally shot and his brother William wounded. News of the shooting reached Gormanston Camp where the Black and Tans were based. They descended on Balbriggan that night intent on revenge.

Brushed Bronze, 50mm medal in black velvet case, with Balbriggan & District Historical Society logo on inner box lid. The medal depicts a scene of the Sack of Balbriggan on the front and the Balbriggan Town Crest on the back. This gift item comes with a 4-page booklet.
